From Seed to Plant: A Guide to Cannabis Plant Growth Stages

The cannabis plant goes through several growth stages, from the moment the first seed is planted until the plant reaches full maturity. Each stage plays an essential role in ensuring the plant's quality and growth. In this guide, we walk through the key stages of development and explain how each one contributes to the plant's final shape and structure.

1. Germination

The development of the cannabis plant begins with the seed, which contains the nutrients needed to kick-start growth. Under the right conditions – moisture and warmth – the seed will crack open its shell and send a root down into the soil. This stage, known as germination, typically lasts 1-7 days and marks the beginning of the plant's life.

Germination is important for giving the plant a healthy start, as this is when the roots become established and form the plant's first connection to the nutrients and water in the soil.

    2. Seedling Stage

    Once the seed has germinated, the plant enters its seedling stage, during which the first leaves – known as cotyledons – appear. These leaves look different from the typical cannabis leaves, but they are essential, as they help the plant convert light into energy through photosynthesis. Shortly after, the characteristic serrated leaves begin to grow in.

    The seedling stage typically lasts 2-3 weeks and requires plenty of light and moisture to ensure the plant grows strong and resilient.

      3. Vegetative Growth

      Once the plant has established its roots and produced its first leaves, it enters the vegetative phase, characterized by rapid growth. During this phase, the plant focuses on developing strong stems and additional leaves, which support photosynthesis and provide the energy needed for the next stage. The plant can grow significantly in both height and width during this time.

      During vegetative growth, it's important that the plant receives sufficient light, nutrients, and water, as it is building up the resources that will support flowering later on.

      4. Flowering

      After vegetative growth, the plant enters the flowering stage. Here, it begins to develop flowers, which contain most of the plant's active compounds and terpenes that give it its characteristic aroma. The length of the flowering stage varies by strain but typically spans 8-12 weeks.

      The flowering phase is crucial, as this is when the plant's final appearance and quality take shape. The flowers also develop small resin glands, visible as tiny glistening specks on the surface of the flower. These contribute to the plant's unique look and make it a striking sight to behold.

      5. Harvest

      Once flowering is complete, the plant is ready for harvest. At this stage, the plant is removed from the soil and prepared for further use. The harvesting process typically involves drying and, in some cases, further processing the plant material to preserve its quality and aroma. After harvest, the plant's various parts can be used in a wide range of products, from skincare to textiles, depending on applicable regulations and intended use.
